Memo to Poolesville Community about Poolesville High School Modernization Testimony

06 Nov 2013 8:06 PM | PES PTA (Administrator)

SUBJECT:                  MCPS Superintendent Dr. Joshua Starr has recommended to the BOE that the modernization of Poolesville High School be delayed two more additional years to 2025.  PHS was built in 1953 and is over capacity.  There are many issues with the building (click here to view a student video highlighting the structural inadequacies of PHS proving our need for a new building.)   If Dr. Starr’s recommendation is approved it will be the third time the projected has been delayed.  We are a small community of 6,000 in a county of almost one million people.  Poolesville can easily be overlooked and passed over when tough decisions are made at a county level.  We can’t let that happen.  We need to make sure our voice is heard.

TESTIMONY:             Every year the Board of Education (BOE) receives oral testimony from the community with regards to the Capital Improvement Budget (CIP) the CIP is the pot of money where school renovations/modernizations come from.  The Poolesville cluster (PES, MES, JPMS, PHS) of PTA’s have organized a team to deliver testimony on our behalf at the next CIP Budget testimony.  Scheduled to testify on our behalf will be Town Commissioner Jerry Klobukowski, PES PTA cluster coordinators Donna Lowell and MCCPTA Representative Joyce Breiner Thanks to Kathy Jankowski we will have a group of student representatives from each school giving testimony as well.

WE NEED YOU:        The testimony team is doing the hard part.  The rest of us have an easy role to fill.  All we need to do is show up at the testimony and support our team.  The best way to get attention from the county and the BOE is to show up en mass in support of our testifiers.  Wear black/gold and something that signifies you are from Poolesville.  When it’s time for one of our testifiers speak we simply stand up and hold up our signs (8 ½ x 11 paper with something written like “Poolesville Needs Modernized”)  Each testimony is 3 to 5 minutes and our Poolesville Students will be lumped into one 12 minute block.  Once they are done we can go home.

WHEN:                        Monday November 11, 2013.  Jerry Klobukowski will be first on the docket and will give his testimony at 7:00 pm.  Our group of students will be on at 7:15 pm.  Donna Lowell will be on around 8:00 pm and Joyce Breiner will be on closer to 9:00 pm.   You don’t have to attend the whole testimony.  The most important part will be that we are there for our students when they testify and support them as they will be supporting us.

WHO:                          Everyone who can and is able should try to attend.  The modernization of Poolesville High School and advocating for Poolesville should not be just a concern to future student/parents that will be attending school in 2025.   This is a Poolesville issue and the quality of schools effects everyone.  Please bring your children.  They don’t have to stay long, just till 7:30 pm so they can witness our students giving testimony before the board.  This is a great learning experience for them.

WHERE:                     The testimony will be at Carver Educational Services Center,850 Hungerford Drive, Room 123 Rockville, Maryland 20850 (click her for detailed directions including where to park and what bldg. entrance)

HUNGRY:                   Don’t come to the testimony hungry.  A group of Poolesvillians will be gathered at Cheeburger Cheeburger in Shady Grove prior to the testimony.  Cheeburger will be donating 20% of the all proceeds to PES PTA for all Poolesville customers from 5:00 pm to 9:00 PM on Monday November 11th 2013.
